The main keep, or "donjon," built over 400 years ago by feudal lord Yamanouchi Kazutoyo offers panoramic views of the entire city, making the climb worth it. Your tour will take you through the beautifully restored Tsumemon Gate, which connects the castle’s second keep to the main hall, and no visit is complete without seeing the living areas, or "honmaru," which host both local and historical treasures. After a walk around the castle grounds, you will board your bus to visit the beautiful Katsurahama Beach, where the statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, known as one of Japan’s most beloved historical figures, who is credited with transforming feudal Japan into a modern, united nation, stands. Our ship will dock at Mount Fuji Shimizu port at 1:00 PM. After breakfast, we will have free time for personal activities and shopping. Guests wishing to join an extra “Kunozan Temple and Fuji Mountain Tour” organized by our guide can do so. Kunozan Temple, accessed via a cable car, is dedicated to feudal Lord Tokugawa Ieyasu, who unified Japan, and is a complex consisting of beautifully ornate bright red buildings. Ieyasu’s son, Hidetada, had this temple built in honor of his father. The three main halls within the complex are designed with influences from different architectural styles. The ornately carved ceiling in Honden Hall is of great interest to visitors. You can write your wishes on a paper and hang it on the strings that dangle from the ceiling, waiting for your desires to come true. This common practice in Japanese shrines is called Omikuji. We continue our tour to view the legendary Mount Fuji. The evergreen matsubara forest at this location, which houses more than 50,000 pine trees, including a 650-year-old tree believed to have legendary powers, is considered one of the top three views in Japan. After the tour, we return to the ship. Our ship will depart from the port at 7:00 PM. Dinner and overnight on the ship.
